Ron Elliott Cartoon Collection

Ron Elliott, Cartoonist

Ron elliott
Spark! Cartoonist, Ronald Elliott was born in a small sod house in Stockton, Kansas as the youngest of five children. He moved with his family to a farm in Agra, Kansas, and in 1936 started attending Agra School. He had a teacher in the eighth grade that encouraged him to develop his artistic talent. She “made a deal” with him, that if he finished all his lessons, he could draw on the blackboard. From that point, Ron always finished his lessons ahead of time so he could draw on the blackboard.

The family later moved to Ottawa, Kansas, where he met and married Veda Geiss. Ron and Veda had two daughters, Shirley and Joni.

Ronald learned to letter signs while working at the Sunflower Powder Company in DeSoto, Kansas and found it to be his passion. In 1956, he moved his family to Wichita, Kansas where he worked at Lawrence Photo until he had an opportunity to move to Shawnee, KS, and work as a pictorial/lettering billboard artist at Gannett Signs in Kansas City, Missouri. He moved back to Wichita in 1961, where he worked at Rich Sign Company. It was at this time that he opened a small sign shop, Elliott Custom Signs, where he worked towards his goal of owning his own full-time business.

Ron began to be recognized in the sign industry as an excellent artist. He was offered a job back in Kansas City at Eller Outdoor Advertising and moved his family to Overland Park, Kansas in 1967. He soon built Elliott Custom Signs into a full-time business in Kansas City. Ronald hand-painted billboard signs up to 90 feet tall and as large as 14 feet by 48 feet. He would stand on the stage and pull the platforms and paint buckets/brushes up by hand using ropes. The stage platforms were needed for him to stand on while painting from the top and lowering to the bottom edge of the signs.

He also hung stage platforms on 165 ft. water towers and custom-painted signs requested by his customers. He has painted pin striping on motorcycles and trucks; gold leaf signs onto bank doors; basketball team mascots on floors in schools; murals and signs for events, businesses, and homes. He enjoyed hiring young artists and teaching them the skills needed for them to establish their own sign companies. The billboard featuring the newest car models each year was his passion because one car would fill the complete billboard and they were always beautiful. It was always an evening treat for him to take his family to see the “latest” billboard sign from cars to snakes, etc. He painted all of the Deffenbaugh Trucks until he sold his Elliott Custom Sign business and retired. After retiring, he illustrated his first book. “Little Folks Ball Game”, written by Viola McGregor in 2009.

He currently has reduced the size of his artwork to lap desk size, where he enjoys focusing on drawing childhood memories. He loves children and spends time drawing “a quick cartoon” illustrating their activities. He always encourages his young students to begin drawing for themselves.

Ronald may not have met you yet, but he wants to encourage you to begin drawing for your own delight. Please feel free to send him an email at myspark@almondbranch.pub letting him know if you enjoyed coloring his cartoons located on this website under the tab “Coloring Pages”.
